ZenTRACK Yabby Installation Guide
Digital Matter Yabby Battery-Powered Asset Tracker
Written By Support Team
1. Purpose and Scope
This guide covers the physical installation of the ZenTRACK Yabby on an asset, including hardware overview, installation considerations, and the basic installation procedure to ensure long-term operational success.
2. Hardware Overview
Device Type: Digital Matter Yabby Battery-Powered Asset Tracker.
Capabilities:
GNSS (GPS) tracking for precise outdoor location.
Cellular connectivity (LTE-M / NB-IoT, model dependent).
Ultra-long-life battery operation (deploy-once design).
Motion-based and scheduled heartbeat reporting.
Limitations:
No BLE gateway functionality.
No digital inputs.
Not designed for constant, second-by-second real-time tracking (to preserve battery).
3. Installation Prerequisites
Materials Required:
ZenTRACK Yabby device
Compatible SIM card (if not already provisioned).
3x AAA batteries: Lithium (Li-FeS2) batteries are strongly recommended for optimal performance, extreme temperature resistance, and maximum life.
Mounting equipment: Screws, bolts, industrial adhesive, or mounting brackets.
Access to Device Manager / Installer Page for real-time verification.
4. Installation Procedure
Installation Location Considerations
Signal Integrity: Avoid installing the device fully enclosed in metal, as this acts as a Faraday cage and will block GPS/cellular signals.
Temperature Management: Avoid locations exposed to extreme heat (e.g., direct sunlight in unventilated spaces) to prevent battery degradation.
Sky View: Select a location with the clearest possible view of the sky to ensure fast and accurate GPS fixes.
Discretion: The device can be installed discreetly, but signal reception must remain the priority.
Installation Steps:
Selection: Identify the mounting location on the asset that balances security with signal exposure.
Powering the Device:
Open the Yabby housing.
Insert the 3x AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
Securely close and tighten the housing screws to maintain the IP rating for environmental protection.
Verification: * Access the Installer Page or tracking platform using the IMEI.
Confirm the device is communicating.
Note: If the device is not reporting immediately, gently move it to trigger the accelerometer and force a report.
Physical Mounting:
Use appropriate mounting equipment to secure the Yabby.
Ensure the device is stable and will not vibrate loose during asset operation.
Final Validation:
Confirm the device reports a valid GPS location after being fixed.
Validate battery voltage and signal strength (RSSI) in the platform.
Battery Level Configuration (Required for Battery Reporting)
To enable Device Battery Level reporting for Digital Matter devices, ZenduOne must be configured with specific device identifiers and model information.
Required Configuration
When creating or editing a Digital Matter Asset, ensure the following fields are correctly populated:
1. Model
Select the correct Digital Matter model according to the device model number:
Oyster β 87
Oyster BLE β 102
Barra β 110
Yabby β 97
*Add only the number in the form field.
2. IMEI
Must be entered in the IMEI field.
This value is found on the device sticker.
3. Serial Number
Must be entered in the Serial Number field.
This value is also found on the device sticker.
Important Notes
All three fields (Model, IMEI, and Serial Number) are mandatory for battery level retrieval.
If any of these fields are missing or incorrect, ZenduOne will not be able to display the device battery level.
Battery data is sourced directly from Digital Matter APIs and depends on accurate device identification.
5. Notes and Best Practices
Sleep Mode: The Yabby operates primarily in sleep mode. Immediate reporting after installation may require physical movement.
Configuration: Reporting frequency should be balanced against the required battery life expectancy.
Battery Choice: Always use lithium batteries for industrial installations where a multi-year service life is critical.
