ZenTRACK Yabby Troubleshooting and FAQ
(Internal – Operations & Support Teams)
Written By Support Team
1. Overview
The ZenTRACK Yabby is a compact, battery-powered asset tracking device designed for long-term deployments and rugged use. It utilizes cellular connectivity and GNSS (GPS) for location tracking, operating primarily in low-power sleep modes to conserve battery life.
2. Troubleshooting Procedures
Issue: Device Not Reporting
Potential Issues: No cellular connection, depleted batteries, poor GPS signal, or misconfiguration.
Check Power: Replace batteries if levels are low. Lithium AAA batteries are required for optimal performance.
Inspect Placement: Ensure the device is not enclosed in metal. Verify it has a clear view of the sky and is within cellular coverage.
Check Configuration: Confirm reporting intervals and movement-based settings in the OEM server.
Verify SIM/Network: Confirm the SIM is active and APN settings match the carrier requirements.
Platform Check: Ensure the IMEI is correctly entered as the serial number in ZenduOne.
Issue: GPS Not Fixing or Inaccurate Location
Potential Issues: Obstructed sky view, weak signal, or short fix timeout.
Relocate: Move the device to an open area with no roofs or obstructions.
Trigger Update: Gently move the device to wake the accelerometer and force a GPS attempt.
Adjust Settings: Increase the "GPS Fix Timeout" in the configuration if the environment is challenging (e.g., urban canyons).
Issue: Cellular Connectivity Issues
Potential Issues: Poor coverage, incorrect APN, or inactive SIM.
Signal Test: Confirm cellular coverage is available at the installation site.
APN Check: Manually verify APN and network configuration settings.
Patience: Remember the device is in sleep mode; it will not connect until the next scheduled heartbeat or movement event.
3. Battery Life and Power Management
Reporting Frequency: Battery life depends heavily on how often the device fixes GPS and uploads data.
Best Practices:
Use high-quality Lithium AAA batteries.
Enable low-battery alerts in ZenduOne.
Avoid frequent updates (e.g., every 2 minutes) if multi-year life is required.
4. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Why does the device show online but not update its location? A: The Yabby may be waiting for movement. If the asset is stationary, it will only report its location during scheduled heartbeats to save energy.
Q: Can I force the Yabby to report immediately? A: No. Because the device turns its cellular radio off during sleep to save battery, it cannot be "woken up" remotely. It must detect movement or reach its next heartbeat timer.
Q: Does the Yabby support BLE beacons or tags? A: No. The Yabby does not feature a BLE radio. For BLE support, use the ZenTRACK Barra or Oyster series.
Q: What should I do if the device stops reporting completely? A: First, replace the batteries with fresh Lithium AAAs. If it remains offline, verify the SIM status and move the device to an area with known strong cellular coverage.
